Making Music

On a bright Saturday morning, I arrived at the apartment of this modest young musician who goes by the name ‘Ko The Timeless’ and has already created a sensation in the Rap scenario as well as a dedicated global fanbase. Born in Chicago of Bengali parents, both scientists, this student of Financial Economics at the University of Maryland has long been interested in the lyrical poetry of Hip-Hop and Rap, and has been pursuing his musical interest with enduring passion under the guidance of his close friend, the Rapper Panama.

He is a talented artist, whose zesty creativity has found avenues through stage performances and mixtapes, as well as internet-based presentations and promotions, all emanating – amazingly – from his modest, self-assembled musical arrangement tucked in a corner of his rather Spartan student accommodation. His entertaining performance at the recently concluded 2008 North American Bengali Conference in Toronto got him an award and generated a huge interest in his artistic work.

We discussed for about an hour his training, his journey up till this point, his future plans and various aspects of his music. He is the voice of the next generation, an Indian-American Hip-Hop entertainer with an international audience, which this net-savvy entertainer regularly reaches out to – through his website, YouTube Channel, and MySpace. He hopes to influence people’s lives and bring them together through his music and lyrical poetry.

Intelligent, talented, sensible and grounded, Ko The Timeless was a pleasure to talk to. At the end of our interview, he presented us with a sample of what he loves doing best: Rap. We, on behalf of Gaanmela, wish him the very best in his endeavors, and hope to chronicle his amazing journey.
