Review by Kaustav Goswami – Gaanmela Journalist

Abhigyan has been successfully organizing Swalpasruto Rabindrasangeet-er Aashor for three consecutive years. Kudos to Agnibha Banerjee for conceptualizing a soiree where the Tagoreans find a welcome respite from singing the ‘over heard’ numbers. This years programme witnessed a jampacked Madhusudan Mancha and Lopamudra Mitra took over as the first artiste of the evening belting out rare songs like,`Shara borosh dekhi ney’,`Ja hariye jay’,`Amareo koro marjona’—–Lopamudra was not at ease with the songs except for the last one, missing rhythm in one of the songs.

Srikanta Acharya’s choice of songs like, Jagey natho jochonaraatey (set to dhamar taal), Aji nahi nahi nidra, Oi pohailo timiroraati (Alaiya Vilaval) was incongruent with the theme of the soiree. His forte was however evident in ‘Alokey kushumo na diyo’.

Swagatalakshmi Dasgupta came saw and conquered—–a complete singer, with an enviable range and an astounding dexterity in emoting the songs, Swagatalashmi enthralled the listeners in her renditions like, Shomoy karo jey nai, Shei to boshonto,a nd Lukiye asho (sung in memory of the late Vikram Singh).

Srabani Sen’s effortless presentation of rare numbers like, Jey phul jhorey (set to raag purabi), Modhuro milon (set to two rhythms), Boney emon phul phutechey, was a treat for the Tagoreans. She concluded her recital with a soulful O gaan aar gash ney.

Subrata Sengupta was pompous with his baritone rendition of Aji shanjher jamunay, and some other numbers which paled into insignificance as Agnibha, rendered classical based Horoshey Jago, Ek phaguner gaan and the romantic Momo joubononikunjey.

Ramkumar Chottopadhyay Passed Away
The legendary singer Ramkumar Chattopadhyay (89) passed away today of septicemia and multi-organ failure in Calcutta. He was under treatment at the Belle Vue clinic in south Kolkata. Ramkumar Chottopadhyay was most known for his expertise on “Shyama Sangeet” – a genre of Bengali music dedicated to Goddess Kali. He was also a master of “Tappa” genre songs originally composed by Nidhu Babu. He also did music direction in some of the Bengali movies including “Street Patra (1972)” and “Parikrama (1996)”. Famous singer and music director Hemanta Mukherjee used Ramkumar Chottopadhyay’s voice in the film “Nidhu Babur Toppa” directed by Tarun Majumdar. Padatik Dance Centre- E-Mo-Ko (Who Am I)

This production choreographed by Chetna Jalan has emerged from the meeting and interaction of several thoughts over the past few years. The most important factor in this production what will attract audience is Samaveda Chanting.  Sama Veda Gandharva Gayan has always enchanted Chetna Jalan, not for its textual meaning but for its awe inspiring phonetic sounds. The energies released from the sound and the inner silences are imbibed from Laban Movement Analysis and Zen Meditation. It can be noted that Dr. Sun Oak Lee, the pioneer of Korean Zen Dance and choreographer as well as Secretary General of Asia Pacific Performing Arts Network (APPAN) came to Padatik Dance Centre and conducted a workshop on the project ‘Chant,’ sharing her knowledge on Buddhist rituals through dance. The music of the chant will be the new synthesis of   Indian Vedic Chant and Korean Buddhist Chant.

About Ananda Shankar Centre for Perforing Arts:

“Ananda Shankar Centre for Performing Arts (ASCPA) started in 1987 is an institution in Kolkata, India, which imparts training in the Shankar Technique of New Age Dance evolved by the artistic genius, the late Uday Shankar. The style is Indian in origin and spirit, modern in presentation and has universal appeal.

The Centre under the able guidance of Tanusree Shankar prepares students to earnestly pursue the highly exalted discipline of creative dance, which though different from the Classical Indian dance form is no less demanding. The Centre tries to inculcate in its students a sense of aesthetic fulfillment, not devoid of fun and entertainment. The training imparted here is unique, since the grammar and technique are not derived from any classical form.

The Centre aims at being much more than a dance institution. It aspires to develop artistes equally adept at performing, teaching and organizing activities connected with show business. Accordingly, the students are taught various aspects of stagecraft and show business administration. The importance of traits like discipline, punctuality and teamwork are drilled into the learners. They also get opportunities to receive training in choreography that few centers provide.

Meritorious students of the Centre are given scholarships to attend residencies at renowned international institutions. There are regular exchange programmes where eminent dancers both from India and abroad, conduct classes on different dance techniques at the Centre. In short, ASCPA dreams of producing artistes of all – round excellence adept at performing in India and abroad.” (by official Anandashankar Website)
