Megher Bari by Jayati Chakraborty

Megher Bari by Jayati Chakraborty<

Contemporary Bengali music raises many a brow from the philharmonic Kolkatans, often with expressions of disgust and endless complaints about the quality of singers and composers.Though, the convictions and misconceptions have been proved null and void by FM channels bringing many fresh voices into limelight with a good number of ‘hit’ songs to their credit.

Jayati Chakraborty, a new promise in the Bengali music circuit swings with a dexterity from her pure classical vocal renditions to Rabindranath’s songs and is creating ripples in the genre of Adhunik Bengali songs. Megher Baari (saregama india ltd), Jayati’s sharadiya offering of eight Bengali songs composed by some of the most gifted musicians like Rupankar, Sreekanto Acharya, Sameer Chatterji and Gautam Ghoshal has some melodious numbers worth a few rewinds. The singer deftly exploits her impeccable classical taiyari in the title track, set to raag desh while her ease with western numbers is evident in the soothing and mellow Esho, esho. The skillful use of esraj and harmonium in Udashin Sharadin takes us on a nostalgic journey down the memory lane, and the folk based Saiyan Saiyan has echoes of the immortal composition of Hridaynath MangeshkarDe Dol Dol‘, with an individualistic touch. However, the song which captures the singer at her best is Jabei Jokhon (composed by Sreekanto Acharya), an extremely melodious number, penned by Arna Sil.

Pratyush Banerjee’s arrangement is worth praising, though his use of the violin piece in the title track is a straightlift from one of Sanjoy Choudhury’s (Salil Choudhury’s son) arrangements. The music lovers can delightfully spend their weekend with a trip to Megher Baari.

I am very honoured that you have traced back the violin piece in Megher Bari to something by Sanjoy Choudhury. Would you be kind enough to name that piece by Sanjoy and tell me where I can hear it? Maybe you could tell me about more such pieces composed by him which can inspire me in future.
If you can, please give me his email address so that I can personally thank him for creating such great pieces which are now music banks for us lesser composers.
    Thank you.

    respected mr.banerjee,

After reading your comment,i felt a wrong message was conveyed, even if it was a ‘straightlift’ you are really creative because RABINDRANATH himself was an eclectic.I am an ardent admirer of your musical genius, have been following the sarod pieces, which i get to hear in albums, and was fortunate enough to sing at ‘hajaar konther gaan’where the track was SUPERLATIVE OF EXCELLENT!
since you haven’t heard the song, its in the album called ‘madhur smriti(times music,2000),sung by antara choudhury.”beet jaat barkha rut”
